JOWAI: Kiang Nagbah Government College in Jaintia Hills that is facing acute shortage of teaching staff is facing another problem of multiple posts held by teachers.
Many teachers of the college are holding a second government post and this trend is affecting students in the college.
The government had appointed one associate professor from the college to the post of the District Mission Coordinator of the SSA, West Jaintia Hills.
“Can the professor serve two masters at the same time? This has really affected the students of the college,” said a retired educationist.
Another lecturer, who is also the Head of the Department of Political Science, was recently appointed as the District Mission Coordinator of SSA at Khliehriat. He was also in charge of the IGNOU study centre in the college as well as the warden of the boys’ hostel.
“The HoD of Political Science looks after the SSA, hostel and also has to attend to his regular classes. As per UGC norms, they cannot be burdened with such heavy work. Their job is to teach the students and not look into any other matters,” a source said.
A disgruntled resident of Jowai said on condition of anonymity, “This is because of the negative attitude of the state government who had made false promises to the people of the state such as lifting up the standard of education.”
Many locals are of the view that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma should look into the matter and come up with a solution.
