42 held in separate excise raids in WGH
TURA:  The Deputy Commissioner (Excise), West Garo Hills has informed that raids have been conducted in the entire district of West Garo Hills where 42 persons were arrested under the Excise Act during May and June.  Several cases were detected including 5 unclaimed cases with seizure amounting to approximately 80.34 litres of IMFL, 151.85 litres of beer and 17.73 litres of ID liquor. In this regard, 54 cases were disposed of and a fine amounting to Rs 65,800 was realised.

MG Univ to hold scholarship distribution ceremony
SHILLONG: Mahatma Gandhi University, Meghalaya will organise Bapuji Chatravitti 2018, an annual scholarship distribution ceremony on July 14 at 2 pm in the university auditorium. The programme will be attended by Deputy Commissioner, Ri-Bhoi District, Superintendent of Police, Ri-Bhoi District as well as headman of fifteen nearby villages. The scholarship will be distributed to deserving and economically backward students to boost their enthusiasm towards healthy education. The motto of this endeavour initiated by MGU is to provide quality education irrespective of economic differences.

Four Turkish universities ink pacts with USTM
NONGPOH: With the objective of development of education and research, the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) has signed four MoUs with four premier universities in Turkey for academic and research collaborations. Several high level meetings took place during the weeklong visit including the meeting with the President of Yunus Emre Institute, Ankara, Government of Turkey and meeting with the President of the Council of Higher Education where it was decided that concerned departments of respective universities will institute fellowship and scholarship for students to go for duel certification by the collaborative universities. All the four Turkish universities have appreciated the effort of USTM for development in the field of education and innovative research. “USTM is determined to fulfill its promises and move forward firmly with its mission to make the University world class by 2030”, stated M Hoque, Chancellor of the University.

Training for volunteers in first aid, search and rescue
Shillong: A two-day training programme for volunteers on first aid, search and rescue organised by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, was held at Bharat Scouts and Guides Training Hall, here on July 5 and 6. The programme was inaugurated by I. Majaw, ADC and CEO, DDMA, Shillong. 60 participants from various organisations including Nehru Yuva Kendra, National Student Services, Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides and non government agencies of Shillong were trained on the basics of first aid and search and rescue methods and also conducted a mock drill. The training was imparted by the personnel from the Office of the Home Guards and Civil Defence, Shillong.

Bike stolen
NONGSTOIN: On July 12, at around 3:30 pm a two wheeler belonging to Nayanjyoti Nath was stolen from Malang Sildubi village, West Khasi Hills while the owner and his friend went for sightseeing in the village. An FIR has been filed on the matter.

Naga body appreciates solidarity
SHILLONG: The Naga Elder’s Forum Shillong together with the Naga Students’ Union, Shillong and all the Naga Civil Organizations based in Shillong expressed gratitude to the people of Meghalaya, civil organisations and well wishers for showing solidarity and condemning the murder of Leiyaton Seraphina Soro on May 26 who was serving as staff nurse of Nazareth. They expressed their appreciation to the state government and police department for arresting the accused in a short span of time.

The Sub Division has also identified Sub Divisional Grievance Redressal Officers and Assistant Grievance Redressal Officers for the public.
