SHILLONG: UDP president and Speaker Donkupar Roy said the MDA coalition will ensure that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma wins the South Tura by-poll.
There were media reports that the UDP local unit in South Tura wants to contest the by-poll against the chief minister.
However, Roy said on Friday that the party will reach out to the local unit not to put up any candidate. “It is our duty to ensure that Conrad wins and leads the MDA,” Roy said. To a question on Ranikor by-poll, Roy said UDP will put up a candidate and wanted others to support.
There were attempts by former KHADC CEM P N Syiem to arrive at a consensus candidate to defeat NPP candidate MM Danggo. However, Roy said Syiem can support UDP candidate Pius Marwein.
“Marwein, hailing from the area is our candidate and he had contested the polls in the past,” Roy added.
