SHILLONG: The Installation Ceremony of the 62nd Board of Directors of the Rotary Club, Shillong, for Rotary Year 2018-19 was held at Pegasus Crown Hotel on Saturday night in the presence of Governor Ganga Prasad, who was also the chief guest.
In his brief speech to the Rotarians gathered on the occasion, the governor hoped that the newly inducted president for Rotarian Year 18-19 will continue to do the good work which the Rotary Club has been doing for the last many years. “The work which you (Rotary Club) are doing, it is important for humanity and your works have contributed a lot for the society in Shillong,” he said while lauding the Club for taking the initiative of organising Rotary Sohra marathon which will attract a large number of tourists and runners to the state.
Stating that the Centre is paying a lot of attention to the Northeastern states and how it can improve its economy, he urged the Club to play a pivotal role in the development of the region which has huge potential.
Guv for turmeric, jackfruit promotion
Asserting that the local turmeric in Meghalaya has huge benefits and is one of the best, he informed that there are plans to increase the turmeric production in the state from tje existing 12000 metric tonnes to 50000 metric tonnes.
Lamenting that large number of jackfruits go wasted in Garo Hills region, the governor said that he has already written to the Union Agriculture Minister on how the jackfruits can be used for the benefit of the state.
Others who spoke on the occasion include the newly inducted president, Kailash Verma, who asserted that it will be an uphill task for him to be the president of the Club but he would give his best and try to live up to the expectations of the people.
Earlier in the programme, the outgoing president, Amit Sharma presented the annual report for Rotary Year 2017-18 wherein activities undertaken by the Club during the past year were highlighted.
