Eight-time Mount Everest climber missing in Karakoram
Darjeeling: Eight-time Mount Everest climber Pemba Sherpa has gone missing while returning with a team of mountaineers after successfully scaling the 7,672 metre-high Saser Kangri peak in the Karakoram range. According to police sources, the seasoned mountaineer from Darjeeling fell into a crevasse on Friday. Pemba’s wife told reporters that the family lost all communications with him since July 13 and she is hoping for a miracle to see her husband again. “Last Friday, a representative of Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) brought the news that Pemba Sherpa is missing,” she said. According to local police sources, an ITBP team has started conducting searches at the spot from on Sunday morning. The Darjeeling administration is also keeping a close watch on the developments. “We are worried about Pemba. He was a skilled person,” Animesh Basu of Himalayan Nature and enture Foundation (NAF) in Siliguri said. The team of mountaineers that the seasoned climber was leading had begun its journey from Kolkata on June 20. (PTI)

Gunfight between police, illegal sand miners in Rajasthan
Jaipur: An exchange of fire broke out between police and some people who were illegally transporting sand gravel in Rajasthan’s Dholpur district on Sunday, but one one injured in the incident and the accused managed to flee, officials said. “A police team tried to stop the tractors at Kanchanpur but its occupants opened fire at the police. The police personnel had to retaliate in self-defence,” the Dholpur SP Rajesh Singh said. He said no one injured in the firing, but the accused managed to escape and a hunt has been launched to nab them. The officer said the six tractors, which were being used to transport the gravel illegally mined from Chambal river, have been seized. (PTI)

Woman lawyer raped by senior advocate in South Delhi
New Delhi: A woman lawyer was allegedly raped by a senior advocate in his chamber in South Delhi’s Saket court, police said on Sunday. The victim, in her statement to the police, said the accused, who was in an inebriated condition, sexually assaulted her in his chamber which was in the same complex where she worked, Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Romil Baaniya said. On the intervening night of July 14-15, the victim called up the police and alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the senior lawyer, the DCP said. Her statement has been recorded and a medical examination has also been conducted, he said. The chamber, where the alleged incident took place, has been sealed and the Forensic Science Laboratory and crime team has inspected it, Baaniya said. A case was registered and the accused, who is in his 50s, was arrested from South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar and later produced before the Saket court, he said. (PTI)

Woman delivers twins in train in Thane
Thane: A young Mumbai woman delivered a healthy twins aboard the Mumbai-Visgakhapatnam Express on Sunday, an official said here. The incident took place as the train arrived at the Kalyan station at 7.52 a.m. The woman, Salma Tabassum Shaikh, 30, then suddenly went into labour. The railway police at the station were immediately notified of the incident, Central Railway spokesperson Sunil Udasi told IANS. A short while later, Shaikh delivered the twins safely amidst cheers and claps by the passengers, railway and police staffers. Present at that time were the Kalyan Station Manager, Central Railway medical team and the railway police. The train was halted at Kalyan for half an hour. After the successful delivery, the woman deboarded the train and was taken in to the Rukminibai Hospital for post-delivery care, Udasi said. The condition of both the mother and her twins were fine. The family hails from a colony near Gousiya Masjid in Ghatkopar. (IANS)

Woman ‘gang-raped and burnt alive’ by five in UP
Sambhal: A woman was burnt alive after having been gang-raped allegedly by five persons in her house in Gunnaur area here, the police said on Sunday. The incident took place on Friday night when the 30-year-old victim was alone in her house with her daughter, the police said, adding the five persons barged into her house and allegedly raped her. The five later took her to a nearby hut and burnt her alive said Gunnaur Circle officer Aqil Ahmad, quoting from the complaint lodged by the victim’s husband. He said an FIR has been registered in the case against five persons including Aram Singh, Mahaveer, Charan Singh, Gullu and Bhona. The body of the victim has been sent for autopsy and the police has launched manhunt to nab the accused, who are absconding. The victim’s husband is a labourer and reside in Ghaziabad. (PTI)
