SHILLONG: Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem has left it to the government to decide on the railway project in Ri Bhoi.
“We hope the government will do whatever it takes for the benefit of the people but it should be subjected to the approval of the people and after taking them into confidence,” Syiem said.
The North East Frontier Railway’s project is being opposed by NGOs from the state who fear that the railway would bring large scale influx.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has made it clear that it will not issue no objection certificate for acquisition of land for Byrnihat-Shillong railway project until the NGOs and traditional heads are taken into confidence.
On the other hand, the Tetelia Bynrnihat railway project too could not make much progress after the work was halted last year.
