TURA: The leader of a group of criminals that called themselves the A’chik National Liberation Army (ANLA) surrendered to North Garo Hills police in Resubelpara on Sunday.
According to a delayed report, Rakkan M Sangma (20) of Rongmatcha village under Resubelpara police station surrendered before North Garo Hills SP Sacheng R Marak, other police officials, family members and church leaders. The district police chief said Rakkan made a revelation in a statement that he had also tried to meet Chairman of the now defunct GNLA, Champion R Sangma and ULFA leader Dristi Rajkhowa before his gang members were arrested. Police informed that Rakkan along with four juveniles, after a secret meeting at Rangsel Reserve Forest, had recently formed the group to collect arms and commit crimes like kidnapping and extortion in the region. While Rakkan remained absconding, all the four juvenile gang members were arrested in the second week of July.
The gang had reportedly threatened village leaders of Rangsel with dire consequences if they reported to police. But the combined efforts of police, church leaders and villagers led to the arrest of the gang members and subsequent surrender of its leader.
