GUWAHATI: History was made at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre on Tuesday when a line of Manohari Gold Special tea was knocked down for a whopping Rs 39,001 per kilogram in sale number 30, the highest rate fetched by any auction centre in the world.

The lot was sold by Contemporary Brokers to Saurabh Tea Traders of Guwahati for their upcountry buyers in Delhi and Ahmedabad.

Sources said the tea was produced by Manohari Tea Estate situated in Dibrugarh and made by C K Parashar under the guidance of the garden’s owner Rajan Lohia

“With inherent quality and special clones of tea bushes and hand plucking of very delicate buds, a lot of effort and dedication was put for manufacturing such world class tea which looks like crystals of pure 24 carat gold,” Lohia said.

He further said that “Manohari Gold will definitely draw the attention of the world and will help regain the lost glory of the tea industry by joining hands with other tea manufacturers committing to make quality teas.

“The phenomenal price speaks that quality has no end and tea lovers are ready to pay any price for such innovative and boutique quality tea,” he added.

Proprietor of Saurabh Tea Traders, M. L Maheshwari said, “Our customers are always looking for best quality specialty teas. Earlier, we had purchased another line of Donyi Plo Tea Estate Specialty tea at Rs 18801 per kg. After seeing this gold leaf our boutique counter clients are happy for a new gold leaf tea for their customers.”

Guwahati Tea Auction Buyers Association secretary, Dinesh Bihani said “This is a proud moment for Guwahati Tea Auction Centre.  The auction centre is giving such a platform where specialty tea creates new records and more demand for such tea is seen across India.”

“This will encourage other quality tea producers to make good quality specialty tea and send it to the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, which has emerged as a hub for specialty tea of late,” he added.
