SHILLONG: Former Congress MLA from Ranikor MM Danggo officially joined the National People’s Party on Wednesday in the presence of the party president and other leaders.
Speaking to reporters, Danggo said he was obliged to join the NPP and he would do his best to serve the people.
Making it clear that he would apply for ticket to contest the by-election in Ranikor, Danggo said he joined the party as a sign of gratefulness to the NPP-led MDA government for upgrading Ranikor into a civil sub-division.
The former MLA revealed that before the February elections, he had discussed with his supporters about joining NPP but two-third of them wanted him to stay with the Congress.
When asked about UDP and PDF who want to contest against him in Ranikor, Danggo said he has nothing to worry if other parties are supporting the UDP candidate since he has “faithful supporters and leaders”.
When asked about the parties and leaders who were criticising him, he said, “What sin have I done by bringing a civil sub-division to Ranikor?”
The former Congress leader, however, refrained from criticising the previous MUA government but only said he had asked for a civil sub-division but was given an administrative unit.
Danggo, a five-time legislator from Ranikor, was formally welcomed by NPP state president WR Kharlukhi at a function held in the office of the party here on Wednesday.
He resigned as member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on June 21 following the state government’s decision to upgrade the Ranikor administrative unit to a full-fledged civil sub-division, which was inaugurated on July 10.
