SHILLONG: Sanbor Shullai, the BJP MLA from South Shillong constituency, has urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to send a delegation to meet Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and submit a memorandum on the grievances of the residents of the Shillong Cantonment area and seek transfer of the Garrison Ground.
Shullai, in a letter to the chief minister on Wednesday, said the primary issue is the difficulty of Shillong Cantonment Board to address the same due to lack of fund and denial of central scheme.
The legislator highlighted issues like fund allocation for various health hazard and development issues, upgradation of Shillong Cantonment hospital and school, building bylaws, Garrison ground and unutilised land.
He said Dhobitala and other areas falling under Shillong Cantonment lack basic sanitation facilities and has insufficient water supply.
Turning to the hospital, he urged the chief minister to upgrade the Jeevan Ram Goenka Hospital by providing modern facilities and quality staff for the welfare of the Cantonment residents.
Shullai added that the Cantonment school should also be upgraded to High School CBSE Board.
To address the congestion and increase in population in Shillong Cantonment, Shullai said there is a need to come up with a building bylaw in the area.
The MLA also sought the transfer of Garrison Ground for public utility and for the upcoming National Games 2022.
Later in the evening, Shullai held a review meeting in which many departments of the state government were present to discuss and review the progress of schemes of the department of South Shillong.
Shullai said there were complaints from the public on the slow progress of schemes which prompted him to call the review meeting.
In the meeting, ongoing schemes of Greater Lumparing Water Supply Scheme, timely release of water, manipulation of private plumber, as release of old age pension, MeSEB’s street lights, crime such as indulging in alcoholism and others were discussed.
“With regard to traffic, there should not be double parking on the road which makes it difficult for Laban residents,” the MLA said.
