SHILLONG: The spokesperson of traditional institutions, John Kharshiing said on Thursday it would have been more appropriate for KHADC to bring amendments after more scrutiny and wider consultation on the Khasi lineage Bill.
He said the views of traditional institutions would have been taken before enacting the law.
“If the situation was so grave, the legislation should have been for Khasi men marrying non tribal women because the same Act presently allows a man to marry a non Khasi and their children have a new Khasi clan through the “tang jait” process”, Kharshiing said.
He stressed the need for passing the Dorbar Kur Bill and wanted to know whether the KHADC carried out a census of mixed marriages.
