SHILLONG: Former legislator John Leslee Sangma has quit NCP to contest the by-poll in South Tura against Chief Minister Conrad Sangma.
In his resignation letter addressed to the general secretary of NCP, West Garo Hills, on Thursday, Leslee cited personal reason.
When contacted, Leslee said on Friday that he would definitely contest the by-poll.
He, however, did not make it clear whether he would contest as an Independent candidate or from any political party.
“Initially, I thought of going solo but some political parties are sending feelers and a final decision will be made known to my supporters shortly,” Leslee said.
The Congress and UDP are expected to field candidates to contest the seat.
Prior to the February 27 polls, along with Leslee, who was the Independent legislator from South Tura, Saleng Sangma had also joined NCP.
Leslee unsuccessfully contested the poll and came in fourth place with 3,314 votes.
The winner, Agatha Sangma (NPP), polled 6,499 votes and Billykid Sangma (BJP) secured 4,896 votes, while Congress candidate Grithalson Arengh got the third position with 3,597 votes. There were as many as nine candidates in the fray.
