SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) sent a petition to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma with regard to the amendment of the (Schedule Tribe) Order 1950 Pt XI, Sl. No. 6 to clearly mention Khasi as Scheduled Tribe in the state

The state youth wing president, Thomas Passah pointed to the irregularities in the Constitution (Schedule Tribe) Order 1950, whereby, till date, the subject order 1950 Pt XI, Sl. No. 6 have notified Khasi, Jaintia, Synteng, Pnar, War, Bhoi, Lyngam as Scheduled Tribe of the State which is incorrect, misleading.

In this connection, the KHNAM urged the CM to consider the matter for amendment by clearly mentioning the word “Khasi” as Scheduled Tribe which constitutes of sub-tribes such as Khynriam, Pnar, Bhoi, War, Marram and Lyngam.

The KHNAM stated that such errors may create confusion and bring about legal hurdles in the future and further divide the indigenous communities if not corrected are the earliest.
