Mukul, ex-ministers yet to vacate govt bungalows

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government has not been able to allot accommodation to the ministers who have applied for government bungalows.
Sources said former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, former Assembly Speaker Abu Taher Mondal and former Sports and Youth Affairs Zenith M Sangma are yet to vacate their respective bungalows which were given to them.
A senior government official of the Secretariat Administration Department (SAD) informed that notices have been issued to all the previous ministers who are still occupying the bungalows
According to senior government official, the former Chief Minister had given indication that he would vacate the Goodwood bungalow at Oakland after the renovation work of the Sherwood Bungalow is complete.
It may be mentioned that Sherwood Bungalow was earlier occupied by former Chief Minister DD Lapang.
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is staying in his own house in Upper Shillong.
Even Education Minister Lakhmen Rymbui is staying in a rented house since the government bungalow in Motinagar, which was allotted to him, is yet to be vacated.
It was also informed that the former Assembly Speaker (Mondal) who lost the last Assembly election is also continuing to occupy the Government bungalow at New Colony, Laitumkhrah.
It may be mentioned that the Supreme Court on May 7 last had struck down the amendment to a Uttar Pradesh legislation which allows former chief ministers of the state to retain government accommodation even after demitting office.
