SHILLONG: Extending support to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018, the conveners of STIEH decided to meet the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) CEM to enact a similar legislation as that of the KHADC.

Speaking at the public meeting, one of the convener of STIEH (Saiñdur, Tipkur Tipkha, Ieng, Ehrngiew, Khun Hynñiewtrep), Purity Phawa expressed hope for the Governor’s assent to the Bill.

Strongly criticising those opposing the Bill, she maintained firm stand not to allow non-Khasi men to marry tribal women.

HSPDP MDC Teilinia Thangkhiew said, “The Bill does not discriminate Khasi women and will not bring about segregation feeling as the Khasi Jaitbynriew constitutes the Khynriam, Pnar, Bhoi and War.”

Stating that they will mount pressure on the state government and Governor to give assent to the Bill, she said a Land Ceiling Act should be enacted and to strengthen the Land Transfer Act.

She said, “Tribals from other states of the country are giving their support to us.”
