TURA: A member of the criminal gang that was working with the Assam-based National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) was arrested on Saturday, a day after a Bodo militant was killed in a gun battle with East Garo Hills police.
The man, who was arrested by North Garo Hills police, was guiding the NDFB militants through the region and had escaped the encounter on Friday, sources said.
Former GNLA commander Grikseng N Sangma alias Rimpu, who had invited the NDFB to operate in the Garo Hills region, tried to escape to Assam in a public vehicle on Friday but was arrested by police at Rongmil outpost in East Garo Hills.
Rimpu was earlier area commander of the GNLA in North Garo Hills and created mayhem abducting people and executing several others. He daringly led a group of GNLA rebels to the main road of the highway near Rari and held a busload of forest personnel from Tripura coming to Tura on excursion hostage for over an hour before returning to the jungle.
