SHILLONG: The FKJGP has demanded that the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Amendment Act, 2011, should be strengthened, besides implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Earlier in the day, the FKJGP Lai Shnong area unit, which comprises Mawnianglah, Mawkhan and Mawrashe, found that 80 labourers working in Upper Shillong do not have work permit, labour licence and trading licence.
The inspection was done at various shops, restaurants, guest houses and construction sites in Upper Shillong from 6th Mile.
Addressing reporters on Tuesday, FKJGP president Wellbirth Rani said the group supported the Khasi Students’ Union’s move to check foreigners from making their way into the state.
“We will meet the state government to implement NRC with 1971 as cut-off year. Apart from NRC, we will demand that the Inter-State Migrant Workmen (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Amendment Act, 2011, is strengthened as it is apparent that labourers are free to come to the state,” he said.
Rani claimed that the state government has not made any effort to stop labourers from outside who are working freely without documents, which prompted the NGOs to conduct checking.
“The government should conduct checks at all project sites otherwise we will do it,” he added.
Turning to the Trading by Non-Tribal Regulation Act, Rani stressed the role of the Khasi Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in conducting regular inspections.
Further, FKJGP have demanded installation of CCTV at every infiltration check gate, which “are crucial areas”, and urged the Dorbar Shnong to be on high alert.
On the other hand, the organisation has decided to support the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second Amendment) Bill, 2018. “We will give suggestions on the bill. We will convene a meeting of elders and intellectuals to give their suggestions too,” Rani said.
Meanwhile, FKJGP Lai Shnong along with Laban police seized hundred liters of illicit liquor from a tourist taxi bearing with Meghalaya registration on Saturday.
