SHILLONG: The UDP wants to have “an understanding” with ally HSPDP in some constituencies for next year’s Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council election.
The party’s general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh, said on Tuesday that there will not be any formal alliance but “both parties are looking to some kind of understanding in different constituencies, at least in KHADC”.
UDP has constituted a sub-committee, headed by its working president Paul Lyngdoh, which is deliberating on seat-sharing in the alliance.
Mawthoh, who admitted to the difficulties for two parties with different ideologies to work together, said, “We have been able to tie up with HSPDP as partner of the MDA. We are working together for next year’s council election. The understanding is only for KHADC and may be later we can even tie up for the JHADC.”
To a query, the general secretary said all but those MDCs facing serious allegations will be given ticket for the 2019 election.
Besides the KHADC election, the party is also gearing up for the Lok Sabha battle next year and has constituted a state election committee. The members include president Donkupar Roy, Mawthoh, vice president Allantry F Dkhar, party MLAs and MDCs, district presidents and party top functionaries like Bindo M Lanong, Smeera A Sangma, Pretty Kharpyngrope and Banalari Khongwar.
