TURA: Thousands of teachers under the banner of the All Garo Hills SSA School Teachers’ Association (AGHSSASTA) on Wednesday took out a rally against the state government at Williamnagar in East Garo Hills, for delaying the payment of their salaries and arrears besides ignoring other demands.

Altogether four months pending salary including 8 months arrears from the year 2016-17, are yet to be released to the teachers although several demands and memorandums were served to both the previous government under Mukul Sangma and the ruling MDA Government in the recent past.

Besides release of their salaries and arrears, the teachers are demanding that salary is given to 4th teachers on the basis of ‘equal pay, equal work’, immediate conduct of 2nd year D.El.Ed course, release of salary in individual accounts and the regularization of their services.

The rally on Wednesday began after a brief meeting at the Rongrenggre Government Higher Secondary School, from where they marched through the main thoroughfares of the town, to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. A memorandum of their demands addressed to Education Minister Lakmen Rymbui was also handed over to the Additional Deputy Commissioner in his chamber.

Meanwhile, local organizations like the GSU and the FAF who have expressed full support to the demand of the teachers also actively participated in the rally.
