SHILLONG: No foreign national was detected in Meghalaya during the drive against illegal immigrants carried out by police after the release of the NRC final draft in Assam.
Superintendent of Police Debangshu Sangma, who is dealing with infiltration, said on Friday the personnel of the anti-infiltration unit and the police continue to check the documents of visitors to the state.
Sangma said during the anti-infiltration drive till date, seven to eight persons, mostly labourers, were prevented from entering Meghalaya daily since they did not have proper documents to prove their identity. They were later sent back since they did not have proper identity cards.
“They were not foreign nationals and if they were so, we would have arrested them,” the SP said.
He said checking has been intensified in all the seven infiltration check gates along the Assam border both in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills.
The check gates are functional at Byrnihat, Umkiang, Ratacherra, Aradonga, Mendipathar and Dainadubi.
The official said with the NGT ban on coal mining, there is lesser detection of immigrants.
The SP said the anti-infiltration branch will continue the drive in the city. “We are carrying out checking at construction sites in Police Bazar, Polo, Laban, Laitumkhrah, Mawbah, Mawlai, Nongrah, Lumdiengjri and NEHU,” the official said.
