SHILLONG/TURA: The MDA government has been following up with the Centre on maximum fund allocation for development projects in Meghalaya, said Chief Minister Conrad Sangma during a by-poll campaign rally in South Tura on Sunday.
“The government has been working hard to ensure an accountable and transparent system. Ministers are visiting different districts to review implementation of schemes. We are taking governance closer to the people,” Conrad told the gathering as he projected the MDA’s vision to take Meghalaya on the path of development.
The current government is putting thrust on the education sector and is committed to laying down a policy to ensure better facilities.
Conrad said he will fulfil the promises made by Agatha Sangma before the Assembly elections in February which also include ensuring urban amenities in Tura.
“People’s opinion is important to us as we march to take Meghalaya to its next level and welcome constructive suggestions and feedback,” he said.
Conrad will face three rivals, including independent and former MLA John Leslee Sangma.
The NPP on Sunday accused John of violating the model code of conduct by trying to disturb peace and harmony.
In its complaint to the returning officer, the party alleged that John, during one of his campaigns, had displayed a video showing PA Sangma visiting a mandir and accepting a tikka, which he interpreted as being converted to Hinduism.
The party also claimed that John tried to malign the reputation of former MP Agatha Sangma by questioning her decision to invite non-Catholics to her residence for prayer when she is a Catholic.
Bernard targets John
Former ANVC-B chairman Bernard Marak has said the former MLA has betrayed people on the issue of the September 30 police firing in Tura and Williamnagar in which nine persons were killed.
“The people of Tura voted for him so that he could bring justice to the victims of the firing. When we elected him five years ago he was a leader not a politician but now he has changed so much… now he praises Mukul Sangma whom he had blamed for the killing of nine innocent persons,” said Marak in a statement issued on Sunday.
“The video being circulated on social media is evidence of John now working with Mukul Sangma,” the former ANVC-B chairman added.
