SHILLONG: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma’s speech during the Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday will be devoid of any achievements and announcement of schemes due to the model code of conduct.
The chief minister is contesting South Tura by-poll.
Sangma will unfurl the national flag in Shillong and deliver his maiden Independence Day speech.
However, Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor said on Monday the Political Department has been apprised of the EC guidelines regarding the restrictions on Independence Day.
As per the guideline, “The speech should be confined to extolling the achievement of the martyrs in securing the freedom of the country, glorification of the Indian state and no political speech enumerating the achievements of the government or party in power or announcement of any schemes or projects should be made”.
Kharkongor said the same applies to the celebrations in the poll-bound South Tura and Ranikor.
