Police orders probe into custodial assault case

TURA: East Garo Hills police have ordered probe into the alleged custodial assault of a village school teacher during detention and his subsequent death.
The investigation into the death of Hillary Ch Momin has been ordered by district superintendent of police RTG Momin following complaints by villagers that Dagal police assaulted him in the lock-up.
A police inspector has been directed to furnish a report in a week’s time.
Police led by Dagal outpost in-charge N Nongkhlaw had picked up the teacher in an inebriated state from the market area on the night of August 4 for creating public nuisance. He was locked up for the night and released the next afternoon. He passed away a week later.
Villagers are blaming police for the death. Nongkhlaw was relieved of his duties pending the enquiry report. The officer was also in Williamnagar police station, sources said.
Meanwhile, a separate probe is being ordered by the district administration following an FIR against the officer in-charge being lodged by the family of the deceased.
