Assam Rifles recover eight assault rifles on Myanmar border in Mizoram

GUWAHATI: As many as eight foreign-made sophisticated assault rifles were recovered along the Indo-Myanmar border during a joint operation conducted by Serchhip Battalion of Assam Rifles and Customs Department on Thursday, according to a report received here on Friday.  The weapons were recovered at a location north of Friendship Bridge at Zokhawthar in Champhai District, Mizoram.
A defence source informed that acting on a tip-off Assam Rifles battalion deployed in the area set up multiple check posts in coordination with Customs Department and other intelligence agencies in order to intercept smugglers.
On being confronted by security personnel about 500 meters from the border on the Indian side, two suspects on a Kenbo motorcycle, fled into Myanmar crossing River Tyao leaving behind the motorcycle and a gunny bag in the ensuing chase, the suspects abandoned their motorcycle and gunny bag.
Security personnel recovered two US origin 5.56 mm M-16 rifles, two German origin 7.62mm G-3 rifles and four Myanmar origin 5.56mm MA3 assault rifles.
