GUWAHATI:  Assam police have arrested the mastermind behind the moral policing incident at Diplunga Tea Estate in Bishwanath district of Assam in which one person was lynched and three others seriously injured by an armed mob on August 15 last.

Police claimed to have arrested the prime accused Dinesh Pator who happens to be the secretary of local Village Defence Party (VDP). It was Pator who had engineered attack on four persons branding them as cow thieves. Four persons were seriously injured in the attack, out of whom one Deben Rajbongshi succumbed to his injuries at Bishwanath Civil Hospital later in the day and rest three were treated in a private nursing home in the town.

Deben Rajbongshi, in his mid-thirties, succumbed to his injuries at Biswanath Civil Hospital after he along with the other three injured persons were rushed to the hospital for preliminary treatment.

Members of the village defence party (VDP) had alerted the police about the mob attack that took place at line number 15 of the tea estate, which is under Sootea police station.

One of the injured had told the media that they were on their way to buy livestock (pigs) when a group of about 25 to 30 persons stopped and attacked them with machetes, iron rods and sticks without provocation.

Police said the four victims of the mob assault were residents of Gereki about 10km away from the tea estate, which is a unit of Dekorai Tea Estate and located about 230km northeast of Guwahati.
