‘No authorisation to stop work in disputed areas’

NONGSTOIN: Following the recent visit of Boko MLA, ASDC, SDO of Kamrup, Assam and other Assam government officials to Salbari near Malangkona in West Khasi Hills with an aim to beautify the Chongadare waterfalls located in the Meghalaya-Assam border, West Khasi Hills DC KL Nongbri said that he was informed by a local villager one day before the programme where he deputed some officials as he has no authorisation to stop it because it falls under the disputed area.
He also said that as per the status quo both the Government of Assam and Government of Meghalaya can bring development in those disputed areas.
He also said that the Meghalaya Government through the Block Development Officer of Mawshynrut
( has implemented lots of schemes in those areas including the MGNREGS, IAY and PMAY where there is no objection from the Assam Government, though as per the resolution of the meeting organised by the Assam officials the district administration of West Khasi Hills has submitted a report to the Government.
When ask about the encroachment of Assam Government which claimed that the waterfall is part of Assam as alleged by some villagers, he said that he has no comments and that he has no authority to comment anything and it’s up to the government to decide.
The Boko MLA during the meeting on August 24 has also announced 1 crore for the beautification of the Chongadare waterfalls which will turn the waterfall in to a tourist destination.
