SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), reiterated the need for implementation of Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state to block around 40 lakh people who are left out of the NRC draft in Assam.
HYC president, Robert Kharjahrin on Thursday said that they have written to Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to incorporate the proviso of ILP and residential permit in the Meghalaya Safety and Security Act and to implement NRC in the state at the earliest.
The state government has asked the Law department to review on how to strengthen the Meghalaya Safety and Security Act and the rules, Kharjahrin said.
The association also demanded an official resolution of the House with regard to the opposition of the state government to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, as the Cabinet resolution is not enough.
Pointing to the illegal immigrants who work without labour license, he maintained that the implementation of labour legislation such as Labour license and work permit is very weak.
“There is failure in the implementation of work permit and labour license,” Kharjahrin said.
Referring to the state government’s Directorate of Infiltration to check foreigners, he said, “I don’t understand why the Directorate of Infiltration is stationed only in Byrnihat and not at the International borders.”
