SHILLONG: A youth apprehended by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Lummawbah Unit and Upper Shillong circle, has revealed the nick-names of some of the big drug dealers in Shillong , who supply to urban and rural areas.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, the youth said, “I mostly earn from non-Khasis in Mawdanriting. There is a person by the name Michael and his wife fondly called Rose orBhabhi and they smuggle drugs in large amounts. I came to know from friends that some of the biggest names are Katha whose husband is an ex-army.”

The youth who dropped out after class XII, took to smuggling to help his friend while he quit drugs one year ago.

Organizing secretary, KSU Nongtgymmai Circle, Richard Mawkhiew raised a concern that small time drug dealers were being caught while the big drug dealers were still at large.

Criticizing the lackadaisical attitude of the police department, he said, “Small time drug dealers are caught all the time. This lady Katha stays in ARC campus as her husband is an ex-army. What is the reason behind the inaction of the police department against her? It shows that the Anti-Narcotic department does not take things seriously.”

Observing at the current scenario, Mawkhiew said that there was no decline in substance abuse as it was spreading  from one locality to the other.

“Drug abuse has not only affected Shillong but other parts of the district as well. The District administration and the police department should do the needful,” he said.

He added that the members will have a central executive committee meeting to discuss on meeting the officials of ARC and to prevent drug smuggling.
