SHILLONG: A youth apprehended by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Lummawbah Unit and Upper Shillong circle revealed the nick-names of some of the biggest drug dealers in Shillong who supply banned contraband in both urban and rural areas of the state.
Speaking to mediapersons on Friday, the youth said, “I mostly earn from non-Khasis in Madanrting. There is a person by the name Michael and his wife fondly called Rose or Bhabhi (sister-in-law) and they smuggle drugs in large amounts. I came to know from friends that one of the biggest drug suppliers is Katha whose husband is an ex-army man.”
The youth who dropped out after class XII said that he took to smuggling to help his friend while he quit drugs one year ago.
Organising secretary, KSU Nongthymmai Circle, Richard Mawkhiew, raised concern that small time drug dealers are being caught while the big drug dealers are still at large. Criticising the lackadaisical attitude of Police Department, he said, “Small time drug dealers are caught all the time. This lady named Katha stays in ARC campus as her husband is an ex-army man. What is the reason behind the inaction of the police department against her? It shows that the Anti-Narcotic department does not take things seriously.”Observing the current scenario of drug menace, Mawkhiew said that there is no decline in substance abuse as it is spreading from one locality to the other.“Drug abuse has not only affected Shillong but other parts of the district as well. The District administration and the police department should do the needful,” he said.
They will hold a meeting regarding the issue.
