Teen drowns after sudden dam water release

NONGPOH: A 15-year-old drowned after water from the New Umtru Hydro Electric Project (NUHEP) was released on Saturday without prior notice.
The girl, identified as Banjanai Khonglah from 15 Mer Byrnihat, was washing clothes when water was released from NUHEP dam. The strong currents carried her away, sources said. A search team from the village found the body hours later.
Two weeks back, two youths from Assam drowned in the same river.
