SHILLONG: The Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) has condemned the Community head and NGOs of Gairong village under Kharkutta Police Station, East Garo Hills for extorting money from a cyber crime victim.
In a statement issued on Monday, the CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing has informed that the woman is a victim of cyber crime.
Her ex-boyfriend Mansrang Sangma circulated a semi nude video of the victim but instead she was summoned to a community meeting on September 6, where she was asked to pay a fine of Rs 3000 to the community meeting and Rs 1500 to the Upper Nogolpara Club. The Dainadubi Mothers Union and some NGOs were also present in the meeting. The community even intimidated to get her arrested.
Next day the victim was summoned again by the Dainadubi Mothers Union at 2.30 pm at the PJAC Hall, blaming her for the video going viral and also on her filing the FIR against the person circulating her video, the statement said.
“This is clear intimidation and the victim was advised not to attend the meeting called by the Mothers Union,” Kharshiing said.
The CSWO condemned such acts of intimidation and extortion and urged the authorities to ensure safety of victims and that they are not harassed and summoned by such exploiting Community heads and NGOs. Earlier, FIR was filed by the victim on August 30 and the person has been arrested.
