GUWAHATI: An earthquake measuring 5.5 magnitude in the Richter scale rocked the region at around 10:20 am on Wednesday. The quake is felt in Assam, Meghalaya and other parts of the north-eastern region besides areas in Bangladesh and Bhutan.
The location of the earthquake was 26.41 degree North and 90.26 degree East and it was at a depth of 10 km from the earth’s surface, according to Indian Meteorological Department.
Initial reports indicated that the epicenter of the earthquake was at Sapatgram just 11 km from Kokrajhar in Assam and 83 km and 132 km from Daga and Thimphu in Bhutan respectively.
The tremor of the quake was felt for quite a few seconds creating panic among residents in Guwahati city and its neighbouring areas including the inter-state boundary areas with Meghalaya forcing the residents rush out to safe places outside their residents.
No loss of life or property has been reported from any part of the region till the filing of this report besides preliminary reports about minor cracks appearing in some of the buildings in Kokrajhar university.
