SHILLONG: PHE minister Samlin Malngiang on Tuesday directed the chief engineer to investigate the water contamination case at Nongkseh in Upper Shillong.
The probe order comes a day after miscreants threw mobil into a water reservoir at Nongkseh creating concerns about health hazards among residents.
Condemning the incident, Malngiang said he would wait for the report before taking action and “if needed, the department will also file FIR against culprits”. He added that the department usually covers most of the water reservoirs to protect it from pollutants.
After the incident, the department has also decided to be more stringent about people coming in the vicinity of water reservoirs.
Meanwhile, police said they got some leads in the incident.
The contaminated water was released unknowingly to the residents on Monday morning.
Meanwhile, former MLA of Mylliem Pynshai Manik Syiem said on Tuesday the PHE Department should have a three-tier security fencing around water supply tanks and at the source.
“At the same time, the district administration should undertake rigorous search to catch the culprit responsible for such an inhuman act. The government can announce reward for anyone who can provide information on who are responsible for the menace,” he added in a statement to the media.
