SHILLONG: Health Minister AL Hek wanted the Shillong medical college to come up at Mawdiangdiang and not on the premises of the current TB Hospital.
As per the earlier agreement, the medical college was to come up at TB Hospital premises and the government decided to construct a separate hospital at Mawdiangdiang.
“Due to the long delay in the construction of the Shillong medical college, I personally feel that the medical college should go to Mawdiangdiang and TB Hospital should remain at the current site,” Hek said.
However, Hek said since the government had signed an agreement with the private party, both the government and the private party should come to an agreement regarding any new site.
“Before taking the matter to the Cabinet, I suggest that if the medical college is constructed in a new site. It will be a win-win situation for the government and its partner.
Wrong specification
Lack of coordination among the engineering wing, TB Hospital and the directorate of medical and health office has resulted in the wrong specification of buildings meant for tuberculosis patients at Mawdiangdiang.
Hek said the buildings which were constructed at Mawdiangdiang are not enough to accommodate the TB patients.
He said responsibility will have to be fixed as there was no cooperation and understanding between the engineering wing, TB Hospital and DMHO for the construction of new buildings for TB hospital.
“We need to complete all the requirements before shifting the TB patients as the buildings are small,” he said.
