SHILLONG: The 164th birth anniversary of Jagatpurush Sree Narayana Guru was celebrated at Sri Aurobindo Institute of Indian Culture on Sunday.
Appreciating the effort of the organisation in bringing people together, Rajya Sabha member Wansuk Syiem, who was the chief guest, said, “We need such organisation today.”
Speaking of Sree Narayana Guru, Syiem said he rose above caste and religion and worked for the betterment of people and society.
School founders feted
The brother-sister duo, Skoi Nongspung and Meris Nongspung who started Nongspung-Mawria Secondary School at Thynroit under Mawkynrew Block of East Khasi Hills were felicitated for their contribution to education.
Coming from a poor background, the siblings were determined to give underprivileged children an opportunity to study by not charging any fees. The teachers get financial assistance from Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, which is distributed among the teachers.
