Shillong: The Khasi Authors’ Society, in its bid to press for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule and garner support for the cause, will hold a public rally on Saturday.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the society said the procession will start from Madan Iewrynghep, or Fire Brigade ground, and culminate at Malki ground where there will be a public address on the issue.
The executive committee of the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH) has extended their support to the rally.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, SNSBH requested the Khasi community to extend their support to the rally and urged the Dorbar Shnong to make public announcement about it.
KAS said in its statement that the “struggle for constitutional recognition of Khasi language” started in 1979 and during the course of time, there had been several delegation, intellectual articulation and public motivation for the cause.
The statement further added that in the course of the struggle, the Khasi language achieved the Associate Official Language status through State legislation in 2005. It has been a subject for higher studies at Calcutta University and Gauhati University since the pre and post-independence period and at the North Eastern Hill University up to PhD level.
Moreover, many Khasi books on diverse subjects of academic and public consumption have been published. These are besides the several seminar papers and scholastic research in local, national and international academia, the press statement added.
