West Khasi Hills DC launches cleanliness campaigns

NONGSTOIN/AMPATI: The Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, I. Laloo, who is also the chairman Swatchh Bharat Mission (G), Mawkyrwat, launched the Swatchhata Hi Seva and Swachhata Shramdaan on Monday.
The initiative was launched in the presence of L. Dhar, executive engineer PHE cum member secretary of District Swatchh Bharat Mission (G) and other officials and staff of PHE PHE and SBM.77 number of Swachagrahis or clean volunteers. A cleaning drive was also conducted along the road sides in Laitlawsang area up to Mawkyrwat.
The launching programme is presided by W. Syiemlieh SDO PHE & District Co-Ordinator SMB, who at the very outset highlighted the aim and objective for observing Swatchhata Hi Seva and Swachhata Shramdaan throughout the fortnight with effect from September 15 to October 2.
Speaking at the programme, Dhar stressed on rendering of services toward cleanliness and remind people of their responsibilities to keep houses, village, school, health centres, anganwadi centres and also public places clean.
The DC emphasised on mass participation of every citizen during these weeks in creating awareness and enforcing the principle of responsibility that sanitation is everyone’s business whereby IEC activities has to be scaled up at various level right from the village level, village institution, commercial centres, tourist places and others.
She urged the stakeholders and the Swachhagrahis to mobilise 100 or more clean volunteers in their respective villages to render more time and services towards cleanliness.
Laloo also stressed on ODF sustainability and encourage uses of Two Pit Latrine.
She also lauded the positive changes happened in the district on implementation of SBM and announced that Solid & Liquid Waste Management will be taken up shortly in all ODF villages.
Meanwhile, Swachhta Hi Seva Run, a run for clean and green will be organised by the South West Garo Hills District Swachh Bharat Mission (G) in collaboration with the District Sports Office and Tura Runners’ Club at Ampati at 7 am on September 22.
The event will be conducted in two categories, namely, a half marathon from Ampati Students’ Field to Zikzak C&RD block and back and Special Run for Green Ampati up to Zikzak block. Registration for the same can be done at the Disrict Sports office and at Black Orange, Ringrey.
Several other programmes and events will be conducted across the district by the SBM(G) team starting from this week up to October 2, to coincide with Gandhi Jayanti.
These include street plays on cleanliness, hygiene, toilet construction and waste management and mass cleaning drive in all the market places, among others.
It may be mentioned that the aim of Swachh Bharat Mission is to achieve a clean and open defecation free India by October 2.
