90 students, 5 professors on Manipur varsity held to thwart fresh agitation

GUWAHATI: As many as 90 students and five professors of Manipur University were arrested by Manipur Police in a pre-dawn operation conducted in the varsity campus following disruption semester examinations in the varsity on Thursday because of sudden outbreak of fresh agitation by students who had resisted the newly-appointed Pro- Vice Chancellor and Registrar to assume office. The University was non functional till recently for a prolonged agitation since May 30 by students and staffs demanding ouster of the Vice-Chancellors Professor A P Pandey.
Sources in Imphal informed that academic atmosphere in the varsity was once again disrupted and came to a halt on Thursday when Professor K. Yugindro of Physics Department chosen as Pro-Vice Chancellor by the Vice-Chancellor, A P Pandey and deputed Registrar Professor M. Shyamkesho of Life Sciences Department, went on to resume their office on Thursday at the university.

The students who are demanding the ouster of V C Pandey, getting the news grouped together and started agitating against the ‘forced entry’ of the said professors. The sudden outbreak of agitation created a tense situation inside the university campus.

After getting information about the agitation several teams of police of Imphal West came to the university. The police guarded the university Academic Block and Examination Block to thwart any unrest inside campus.
