SHILLONG: Meghalaya State Congress has opposed any move to bring about Panchayati raj like institution in Meghalaya.

Talking to media persons, Congress leader and former Minister , Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that as per media reports, Centre wad going to amend the Sixth Schedule and bring abour panchayati raj like institutions and party would opposes it tooth and nail.

“ We will not accept the dilution of the Sixth Schedule,” he said while adding that Meghalaya was exempted from the Panchayati raj system under the 73rd an 74th amendments.

According to Lyngdoh, the party will forego finance rather than dilution even as he suspected that the move might have some hidden agenda of the BJP and the dilution of the Sixth Schedule would endanger the indigenous communities of the state.
