SHILLONG: Former Congress leader DD Lapang will not enter electoral politics but will continue to remain active in politics as a father figure.
UDP leader Bindo Lanong, who called on Lapang on Friday evening, said indications from the veteran leader were that he would not contest the future elections but will continue to serve people still being active in politics.
“Lapang wants to be a father figure in Meghalaya politics,” Lanong said.
Though the NPP, BJP and UDP were keen to get Lapang to board, the veteran leader is yet to make a decision in this regard.
In a recent interview with The Shillong Times, Lapang had said he would continue to serve people but did not specify which party he would join though he cited the examples of elderly leaders elsewhere in the country who were active in politics irrespective of their age.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had met Lapang in Delhi after the latter submitted his resignation and in Shillong, several leaders of various political parties met him.
According to Lanong, the UDP delegation comprising Jemino Mawthoh and the Ri Bhoi UDP president did not insist Lapang to join the party.
“It was a courtesy call. We met him since he had served the Congress party and the state for long” he said, adding that there was no specific invitation to Lapang to join the party.
