GUWAHATI: Senior Congress leader, John F Kharshiing has shot a letter to the chief engineer of PWD (Roads) on Monday seeking his intervention in regard to the poor road condition from Warmawsaw to Mawdem village in Ri Bhoi district.
In the letter to PWD (Roads) chief engineer, L Suchiang, the contents of which were shared with The Shillong Times, Kharshiing, who had travelled to the village from Shillong by road on Monday, said that owing to the “horrendous” road, he had to leave his vehicle at Warmawsaw and had instead avail a pick-up to Mawdem in an ambulance arranged by the village secretary.
Of the 12km stretch, only 4km has been blacktopped and work on the remaining distance is pending since the tenure of former Jirang MLA, JD Rymbai (who was elected for the third time in 2003).
“The inputs I get here is that shockingly Assam has already started road construction via Patgaon village, which is 20km from Mawdem village. The new MLA is also aware of the situation and hopefully he will intervene with the government of Meghalaya,” Kharshiing stated in the letter.
Mawdem village is under Jirang constituency which shares a border with Assam.
“The village heads in frustration are contemplating seeking help from Assam as the response from the governments has been slow in the past 70years,” he added.
