SHILLONG: The Indo-Bangladesh border fencing is progressing at a snail’s pace owing to land acquisition problems.
An official said fencing work is currently on at Rynku in East Khasi Hills.
The official added that fencing is yet to be done on around 100 km of the border and work could not be started due to land acquisition issues and inclement weather.
Reacting to a query, the official said high mast lights have been installed in many places where there are gaps. Besides, other technologies are being used to plug the gaps. Around 12-13 km border stretch remains unfenced due to riverine areas and other factors.
Meghalaya shares 443 km with Bangladesh. Many pressure groups had been opposing the fencing work and demanding that it should come up from zero line and not inside the 150 yards of the Indian territory fearing that farmers would lose their cultivable land.
The Supreme Court is now monitoring the work.
