State AAP to contest in Council polls
SHILLONG: The Aam Adami Party (AAP), Meghalaya, will take part in the Council polls of 2019. This was informed by AAP state coordinator, Wanshwa Nongtdu in press statement. The office bearers and the district executive committee members of Ri-Bhoi AAP were also elected which includes Teibor Mynsong as district co-ordinator, Akbar Rympeit as district secretary, Aitihun Lapang-district treasurer, Ambolin Lapang-district chairperson AAP Women’s Wing Ri-Bhoi besides other executive members.

Relief materials sent to Mallangkona refugee camp
NONGSTOIN: The West Khasi Hills District Administration on Monday announced that on September 22 relief materials were sent to the refugee camp at Huhuapara.
District Officials said that adequate quantity of rice, dal, mustard oil, potatoes, onions, sugar and other relief materials were distributed to the victims. It was also informed that after the incident, the District Administration had on September 20 deputed District Magistrate S. Warjri of West Khasi Hills to assess the situation at Sildubi which is one of the refugee camps in Mallangkona. A medical team was also dispatched to the area for the betterment of the people. The District Administration informed that police personnel will secure the village of Huhuapara while West Khasi Hills police will safeguard the refugee camp at Sildubi.

Students’ body opposes hike in examination fees
JOWAI: The Kiang Nangbah Government College Students’ Union has expressed its opposition regarding the hike in examination fees including practical fees for science stream. Vice President of the Students’ Union Dawyoo Lyngdoh said that the college authority has hiked the examination fees from Rs 800 to Rs 1150 and practical fees from Rs 150 to Rs 200. “The examination fee is more than the fees collected by private colleges and we don’t know why the college authority had suddenly increased the examination fees this year,” Lyngdoh said.

Permission mandatory for fishing competitions in EJH: DC
Shillong: The East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner has informed that unauthorized competitions conducted on the part of any organisation, individual or group without any prior permission from the District Administration will be prosecuted according to the law. The order comes into effect following information that fish pond owners under East Jaintia Hills District regularly organise fishing competitions based on NOCs obtained from the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council without due permission obtained to hold such competition from the office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills.

Army cycle rally kicks off in city
SHILLONG: An ‘army cycle rally’ was held on Monday as part of the Army’s Adventure Activities comprising of 22 cyclists from 58 Gorkha Training Centre and Assam Regimental Centre. The rally will cover a distance of 2231 Kms and will culminate at the Nation’s Capital. Lieutenant General Depinder Singh Ahuja, AVSM, General Officer Commanding 101 Area flagged off the rally at Rhino Museum. The month long cycle rally expedition has been organised with an objective to promote the spirit of adventure through interactions with veterans and Veer Naris enroute. This rally also aims at encouraging the youth to join the Indian Army.

Photography competition to be held in Nongpoh
NONGPOH: In a bid to promote cleanliness as well as to commemorate ‘Swacch Bharat Diwas’ as part of the Swacchata Hi Seva, the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi has informed that a photography competition centered on the theme ‘Cleanliness is Health’will be conducted under the District Water and Sanitation Mission (DWSM), Ri Bhoi District. The Deputy Commissioner who is also the Chairman of the DWSM also informed that all individuals are invited to participate in the competition which will have no entry fee. Photos taken should be submitted on or before September 26 to the following WhatsApp numbers – 8837264535 and 8575455274. Participants are also requested to submit their full names along with their addresses and a photogragh. The prize distribution ceremony wull be held at Circuit House in Nongpoh on October 2.

Inter-School Debate Competition
SHILLONG: The PN Chaudhuri Memorial Inter-School Debate Competition 2018 was held on September 21 at Rilbong PN Chaudhuri Higher Secondary School. Aayushi Mishra of BSF Senior Secondary School emerged as the winner of the competition followed by runner-up Nikita Sunar of Rilbong P.N. Chaudhuri Higher Secondary School while Aayushi Mishra of BSF Senior Secondary School was awarded the Best Humourous Speaker Trophy.

Seminar on mathematics
SHILLONG: A two day National Seminar on Pure & Applied Mathematics on was held from September 19 to 20 at St. Mary’s College Auditorium as part of the Department of Mathematics’ golden jubilee celebrations. East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner P S Dkhar attended the inaugural function as the chief guest along with DK Ganguly from the Department of Pure Mathematics, Calcutta University. Resource persons for the five sessions of the seminar comprised Rita Choudhury, Department of Mathematics, Guwahati University, Saikat Mukherjee, Department of Mathematics, NIT, Shillong, Seema Sarkar Mondal, Department of Mathematics, NIT, Durgapur, Sukanta Pati, Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati and Swaroop N Bora, Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati. The seminar was attended by research scholars and faculties from various universities and colleges from across the country. The programme was sponsored by the Goverment of Meghalaya under the VAF (Chief Minister’s fund) through the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills.

Layaakriti concert today
SHILLONG: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) will organise a concert by Layaakriti – an all women’s percussion band from Bengaluru – at the Asian Confluence in Laitumkhrah on September 25 at 7:00pm.

Season-3 quarter-finals conclude
Shillong: The quarter finals of the state’s biggest talent show – Meghalaya’s Got Talent Season 3 – concluded on Saturday. The show, which took off on September 8, aims at providing a platform for the people of the state, especially the youth, to showcase their talents in different categories such as singing, dancing, magic act, beat boxing, instrumental and others. The semi-finals will be telecast across the nation on DD Northeast channel and t7 News.

BSNL offers additional data quota in view of festive season
Shillong: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is introducing bumper offers of extra 2.2 GB/day this festive season in addition to existing freebies on its popular data plan and combo vouchers. This offer has been available on PAN India basis from September 16. The free ‘data per day’ is to be incremented by 2.2 GB/day for unlimited Plan Vouchers like Rs. 186, 429, 485, 666 and 999 and for unlimited STVs like Rs 187, 333, 349, 444, 448 respectively as ‘Festive Tohfa’ for 60 days for its new and existing customers.
