Guv to inaugurate intl conference at USTM
SHILLONG: Governor Tathagata Roy will inaugurate the international conference on Mahatma Gandhi’s Vision and Contemporary Political Leadership in North East on October 5 at the University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM).
On Thursday, Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of USTM visited the Raj Bhawan to welcome the governor to Meghalaya on behalf of the students and faculty of RIST and USTM, two premier educational institutions run by the ERD Foundation in Meghalaya and requested Tathagata to inaugurate the event next month.
The international conference is being organized by the International Centre for Gandhian Studies, a constituent of USTM on October 5 and 6 on the occasion of the celebration of the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation. Eminent Gandhain scholars and reputed academicians will participate in the conference.
Since the Governor also happens to be the ex officio Visitor to USTM, the chancellor gave an update to him recalling the history of the institution, its various achievements over the years, as well as plans and programmes for the coming years.
Hoque informed that service to the entire North East in general and Meghalaya in particular is a priority before the University. He also informed the governor that more than 1,100 students from Meghalaya are presently studying in USTM among its 5,000 plus students.

Implement Nongstoin Water Supply Scheme’
Nongpoh: Concerned over the shortage of drinking water in Nongpoh Town area, a delegation of the Nongpoh Town Committee (NTC) led by its chairman C.B Syiem and general secretary Rayonald Kharkamni met PHE Minister Samlin Malngiang on Thursday and sought his intervention to implement the Nongpoh Water Supply Scheme at the earliest.
Accompanied by Allantry F Dkhar, Political Adviser to the chief minister, the NTC delegation handed over a memorandum to the PHE minister.
Kharkamni informed that the minister assured the delegation that he would take up the matter with the authorities and ensure that the scheme is completed with funds sanctioned under the 15th Finance Commission.

Swacchata Hi Seva Diwas held across NGH
Shillong: Keeping up with the Mission of Clean India, Swachhata Hi Seva Diwas campaign is being observed across North Garo Hills district.
The campaign organised by the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) and District Water Sanitation Mission kicked off on September 15 and will go on till October 2, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The mission Clean India is expected to give a new impetus towards the importance of cleanliness and sanitation in the district and the country as a whole.
Various activities such as cleaning drives, rallies, orientation on solid and liquid waste, sanitation and behavioural change, essay and quiz competitions were also conducted during the campaign.

Rashtriya Poshan Mela at Pynden Mawthawiang
Mawkyrwat: The office of the District Programme Officer ICDS, Nongstoin in collaboration with the office of the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO), Mawkyrwat on Thursday organised the Rashtriya Poshan Maah at Pynden Mawthawiang, in South West Khasi Hills having the lowest performance in immunization and other health related issues.
The awareness programme was part of the Poshan Abhiyan aiming at reaching every household with the message of nutrition especially for children in the formative years which is mobilized through frontline workers such as ASHA and Aganwadi workers.
Pynden Mawthawiang village was regarded as one of the villages where people were not cooperating or participating in government programmes and therefore resulted in low nutrition, immunization and other health related issues, a release issued here said.

Riverside Run in Mawkyrwat
MAWKYRWAT: As part of the observation of the Swacch Bharat Diwas, the office of the District Sports Officer, Mawkyrwat has decided to organize an open to all district Bharat Mission riverside run for both men and women on October 2.
District Sports Officer, P.B. War Nongbri informed that the run will start from 5:30 A.M from Deputy Commissioner’s office towards Sakwang junction, then right turn towards Wahsala, Pynden Sakwang up to Sakwang Presbyterian Church (Turning Point) & back from the same route to D.C.’s Office at the distance of 7.5 kms.
Interested participants can register their names at the office of the District Sports Officer, Mawkyrwat on or before October 1.
