Awareness programme on Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Bill
SHILLONG: The Hynñiewtrep Youth’s Council(HYC) Mawthadraishan Circle will organise an awareness programme on the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Bill 2018 passed by the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) at Markasa market on Thursday. The CEM of KHADC HS Shylla, MDCs, leaders of STIEH including NGOs from Mawthadraishan will be attending the programme.

World Senior Citizen’s Day observed in state
SHILLONG: Together with the rest of the world, International Day for Older Persons or World Senior’s Citizen Day was observed across the state on Monday. The office of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) in collaboration with the office of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), South West Khasi Hills District organised a programme at Mawpharkhrew village to commemorate the day. Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Rev. SI Iawphniaw, Executive Secretary of Mawkyrwat Presbytery lauded the government for the continuous efforts in bringing about social development in the state through various schemes and reminded the gathering about the responsibilities toward parents especially the elderly. Others who spoke include P Suchiang, DSWO, FR Lartang, DM&HO, RS Marweiñ, Myntri of Mawranglang-Mawpharkhrew and C Kharsyiemlieh, Myntri of Mawranglang. Meanwhile, the District Social Welfare Officer of Ri Bhoi in collaboration with the District Legal Services Authority, Ri Bhoi District organised a programme at Duya Community Hall, Diwon. Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Rosetta Mary Kurbah graced the occasion as the chief guest. In her address to the gathering, Kurbah stressed upon the importance of respecting the aged. She also suggested that a club for older persons to be formed so that they could come together and share their feelings and experiences among. She also spoke on the old age pension scheme and urged those who are not yet covered to approach their respective Block Development Officer and Child Development Project Officer, ICDS. Others who spoke on the occasion were T Sangma, M & HO, R Lapang, Advocate, B Rynjah, CDPO, Umling, W Nongrum, DSWO and K Tmung, Headman of Diwon. The Erpakon Sports Social and Cultural Club also organised a similar programme at the village community hall which was attended by District Youth Coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan, Ri Bhoi Romio Myrchang as the chief guest in the presence of village Secretary Lambor Kharshilot, Lansius Syiemlieh and others.

Legal awareness in Ampati
AMPATI: An awareness programme on NALSA (Legal Services to Senior Citizens) Scheme, 2016 was organised by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), South West Garo Hills, at the DRDA conference hall in Ampati on Monday. The programme was held as part of the International Day for Older Persons. Judicial Magistrate (FC), I.R. Marak said that senior citizens face a number of challenges and difficulties, including social, physical, mental as well as economic. “Keeping this in mind the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) came up with the Legal Services to Senior Citizens Scheme,” she said, adding that this programme was being conducted to make them aware of their legal rights and the availability of legal services for senior citizens. Legal Aid Counsel Samir Chakraborty deliberated on the legal rights of senior citizens including Sections 125 to 128 of Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 which enables senior citizens who are unable to maintain themselves to claim maintenance from their adult children if they neglect or refuse to maintain their parents. He also informed that the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, enables a mother to file a petition against her son/daughter if she is subjected to domestic violence and claim relief provided under the Act. The Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 was also discussed during the programme. During the programme, district social welfare officer Linda J Sangma highlighted on the different schemes offered by the department.

Baby delivered in ambulance
SHILLONG: Early Dempep (25) delivered a healthy baby girl inside an Umsning-based 108 ambulance while being transferred to Nongpoh Civil Hospital. EMT Lakhamti Rumnong assisted with the delivery.
