SHILLONG: The NPP and the UDP have castigated Mukul Sangma for writing to the chief minister on “haphazard transfer” of police officers.
NPP state president WR Kharlukhi taunted Mukul on Friday saying he would remain leader of the opposition till the tenure of the coalition government and “I am happy that he realised his role”.
Referring to Mukul’s letter to Conrad Sangma questioning the government on transfers, Kharlukhi defended the chief minister by counter-attacking the opposition.
“Though the opposition brought up the issue of Meghalaya Rural Bank on the floor of the House, the former chief minister forgot that all the events pertaining to the rural bank took place during his tenure,” he said.
UDP leader Bindo M Lanong was also critical of Mukul for writing the letter and said transfers were part of the routine matter and the government should be allowed to look into this aspect.
“If there is anything found to be in contravention of the law, we can always suggest and advise the government as long as it is within the parameters of administration, it is a normal routine matter,” the UDP leader added.
In his letter, Mukul had urged Conrad to discuss about the series of transfers in the State Security Commission at the earliest as those were “outcome of political interference” and vitiated the environment in the police organisation.
Lanong said if the transferred officers were found to be “inactive or not up to the mark, the government can always replace them”.
