SHILLONG: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has cleared three names, including that of RP Agarwal, who is likely to be appointed as the new DGP.
Earlier, after senior police officer R Awasthi retired on September 30, Agarwal was temporarily appointed as the DGP in addition to handling his own Prisons Department.
An official source said on Friday that Chief Secretary Y Tsering had held a meeting with the UPSC in Delhi on Monday following which three names were shortlisted.
The decision of the UPSC was following the direction of the Supreme Court that the state government cannot appoint acting DGPs and the appointment should be carried out by UPSC.
