SHILLONG: The Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) on Monday decided to welcome the five MDCs from People’s Democratic Front (PDF).
KHADC chief executive member HS Shylla told reporters that their support has increased the strength of KHDA to 27.
The five MDCs announced their support to the ruling alliance on Friday.
The council members who switched sides are PDF parliamentary party leader James Ban Basaiawmoit, Banteidor Lyngdoh, Hadrian Lyngdoh, Morningstar Mawsor and Arbinus Lyngdoh.Earlier, three PDF members – Latiplang Kharkongor, James Sylliang and Blanding Warjri – had already extended support to the executive committee.
The KHADC executive committee has the support of 27 members – six UDP MDCs, eight PDF MDCs, four each from HSPDP, NPP and the Congress and a KHNAM council member.
The recent development prompted PDF MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri to suggest on Monday that the party should re-organise itself keeping in mind the district council election and if leaders fail to do so, it should be dissolved.
Speaking to reporters, Kharpuri said the disciplinary committee of the party should take action against the five MDCs.
“The five MDCs should be punished and if the party fails to do so, the president of PDF and the general secretary should resign,” she added.
