SHILLONG: Following suit of other states, the Meghalaya Government too has decided to reduce the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 2.50 paisa per litre.
The decision to reduce the petrol prices was taken at a cabinet meeting here on Wednesday.
Talking to media persons after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the new price of petrol and diesel would be effective from Thursday morning
It may be mentioned that the price of normal petrol in the city on Thursday was Rs 81.65 per litre while the price of diesel was Rs 74.23.
The price of extra premium variety of petrol was Rs 84.61 per litre.
According to Tynsong, the State Government took the decision line with the decision of the Centre recently where it reduced the petrol prices by Rs 2.50 per lite.
With this decision, the State Government would be incurring a loss of around Rs 15 crore annually.
When asked how the Government will bear the loss in view of the poor financial position of the state, Tynsong said that the Government had entrusted to the few departments to work it out to help the State generating additional revenue to meet this loss.
“Various departments would report to the Cabinet again on the steps they are planning to take for generating additional revenue,” Deputy Chief Minister said.
He also said that the departments who had been entrusted with this task includes Mining and Geology, Forest and Environment, ERTS among others.
To a question if there was pressure from the Centre to take this decision, Tynsong said that the question of pressure from the Centre does not arise.
