SHILLONG: UDP legislator Lahkmen Rymbui has called for anti-defection law in the amended Sixth Schedule to check the “unhealthy practice” of shifting allegiance.
“We really need anti-defection law in the district council. It (Defection) is not a healthy practice and it has become difficult for political parties,” he told reporters.
“We cannot deny the fact that every MDC or MLA wants to be on the side of the government. It is even more difficult, especially in Jaintia Hills, where in one Assembly constituency, 3-4 MDCs are there,” he added.
The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) recently witnessed eight MDCs from People’s Democratic Front switching allegiance and extending support to the ruling alliance in the council. The KHADC opposition now has only two members.
According to Rymbui, the anti-defection law should be included in the amended Sixth Schedule.
Former KHADC chief executive member PN Syiem was a Congress leader who floated the People’s Democratic Front after his suspension from the party. Also, the current CEM H S Shylla won the council election on UDP ticket and shifted to NPP.
